Lorraine Thompson

I have been teaching/working in the fitness industry for over 16 years. Im very passionate about the industry I work in and I started many years ago as a Sports Development Officer in Cambridge. I then became the Sports Development Manager at Harlow Sport Centre, The Fitness Manager at Chesterford Research Park  and then went on to Programme Manager at The Next Generation Health club in Cambridge. I got myself qualified as a ETM Instructor as I loved Group Fitness and the rest is history!

Ive always been hard working and always looking at ways to get people involved with fitness and hope they love it as much as I do.

REPS Levels 3; Level 3 Diploma Mat based Pilates; Action UK Freestyle Pilates; YMCA Level 3 Ante/Post natal exercise; level 3 Weight Management and nutrition; YMCA Level 2 Exercise to music; YMCA Level 2 Fitness instructor; Les Mills Body pump, combat, balance and attack; Spinning; Circuit training; Fitness FX; Stomp FX; Core stability and Boxercise, Pound Fit, Kettlebells, Core, Clubbercise.

Rebecca Lowe  - BBX, Les Mills Body Pump, Core, Bootcamp and Insanity.

Hi I’m Rebecca and I absolutely love fitness. Those of you who know me know I train like a machine, with a passion for throwing myself into everything I do.  It is my desire to share this passion with others and spread the happy fitness vibes that made me want to become involved in this industry.

It hasn’t always been this way for me. At school I never really disliked exercise, but I was a naturally very overweight child and kids that age can be cruel, especially in PE, so particularly during my teens I became very body conscious and lost all my confidence about doing any physical activity.

It was at this stage in my life that I began to experience mental health problems and over the next few years I was constantly up and down, deteriorating to the point where I was hospitalised on several occasions. It became a problem in every part of my life- I couldn’t hold down a job, I had to drop out of university after just a term and while my friends were moving away and getting boyfriends and jobs, I was at home or in therapy. Every day was a constant struggle, filled with obsessive thoughts and destructive routines. I had very low self esteem and a very negative relationship with my body. Then I discovered exercise.

For the first time in ages, I had found something that made me feel good after I did it, I loved the rush of adrenaline and endorphins.  I loved the challenge and I loved the feeling of being in control. For ages I had felt like I was doing just what the doctors said in terms of pills and therapy, and this was something that I could take charge of and do for me to help me manage my emotional difficulties. I began to train regularly in the gym and pool and quickly found myself hooked.

The rest as they say is history. In an attempt to break my isolation, I started fitness classes ( very quietly!) at first and discovered a whole new way to get fit and I met Lorraine. By this stage I realised that exercise was something that I enjoyed and I began to think about it as a career. After about a year of harbouring my secret ambition to become a fitness instructor and having had an emotional wobble and a good talking to from the GP, I found Lorraine’s website online and emailed her. Finally someone gave me the confidence and the push I needed to take the step to start bootcamps and get qualified. I sat my first exam, exercise to music, in August 2014 and I haven’t looked back. I have just finished my personal trainer exams and early in 2015 will be doing advanced qualifications in exercise referral ( working with GP patients), sports specific conditioning, life coaching and obesity/ diabetes management.

I have a holistic approach to exercise and I am truly passionate about using exercise to improve mental as well as physical wellbeing. If life has taught me one thing, it is that you can work hard at changing how your body looks, but it won’t make any difference unless you like yourself on the inside first. I have been inspired by the positive attitude of the ladies I have met and it is a privilege to help such wonderful people achieve their fitness goals.

Jen Shackleton – Aerobics/LBT, Pound Fit

2017 is a big year for me; alongside my career as a primary school teacher, I have started out in fitness, and I’m so excited! Since June 2016, with fantastic support from Lorraine, I have completed my Pound training and Exercise to Music Level 2. January sees me starting to take my own adult classes with children’s classes to follow soon after.  I have high hopes for an exciting, energetic year; I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of Lorraine’s team and to be motivating and getting to know all of the members.

Felicity Whitlock – Les Mills Body Pump and Body Balance

I’m Felicity…aka Fizz!

I’ve been teaching aerobics since I was 17 years old…I think this in it’s self proves “I Love My Job!”

I teach aerobics, LBT,Step,Aqua,BodyPump,BodyAttack, BodyBalance and have now recently qualified in clubbercise.. I love to see people enjoying classes, having fun and reaching their fitness goals.

Petra Barnby – Yoga/Yoga courses

My name is Petra Barnby and I’m addicted to yoga. Yoga has been a constant thread in my life for 12 years, and in that time it has saved me again and again, physically, emotionally and spiritually. When combining the physical and philosophical elements of yoga, I believe completely in its ability to heal all of life’s ills. There is a reason yoga has survived almost unchanged for two and half thousand years – because it works.

In 2012 I trained with the Indian Yoga Alliance (200 hours) in Barcelona where my husband and I lived for five years. We then lived in Rome before coming to Saffron Walden in 2015. My experience abroad taught me many things which I weave into my yoga classes. In 2015 I did a foundation course in Pranayama, the ancient yogic breathing technique.

My yoga classes are designed to help you explore your physical and mental potential. I believe that by exploring the potential of our bodies, we also explore the potential of our minds. I am committed to encouraging people to start their own home practice so they can benefit the way I have from this beautiful ancient tradition.

Natalie Ellis – Bootcamp and currently studying Yoga.

My love for fitness started just over two years ago when I joined Saffron Walden Fitness and started bootcamps. After having three children, and not taking care of my eating habits, I was out of shape, unhealthy and lacked confidence. I soon discovered that regular exercise with like-minded people soon got me back on track. This year I decided that I wanted to help others achieve their goals, just as Lorraine and the team had helped me.

Over the summer I trained with the YMCA in Cambridge and qualified as a level 2 fitness instructor. Looking to further my career, I also qualified as a B Burlesque instructor, adding something fun and unique to my skills. I am currently undertaking Yoga Kidz Worldwide training and I am doing my two year, 200hr, yoga diploma training with CAMYOGA. The buzz I get from instructing, when seeing how happy, healthy and confident it makes people, is why I love this job, and I will forever put my heart and soul into what I do. I continue to be inspired by SWF members and their hard work and dedication, and feel proud to be part of an amazing team and family.

Emma Cuadrado – Barre Concept

I started my dance career many years ago. After graduating from Northern School of Contermporary Dance I took time out of the dance industry and later had my daughter. While I was on maternity leave all I could think about was getting back in shape and to join a class that pushed me as much as dance did but lacked the confidence to join a class. Thats when I found BarreConcept and I was hooked! My body has bounced back to when I was a dancer and its excites me. I am now a qualified BarreConcept teacher and enjoy every moment.

Barre classes mix elements of Pilates, dance and yoga and the moves are choreographed to motivational and fun music. The small isometric contractions are performed with an interval training approach that burns fat and improves cardiovascular fitness. Your posture, flexibility, stamina and core strength will improve. The result is a body that is realigned, rebalanced and works harmoniously and efficiently.

Liz Cowell – Kids Dance classes and Adult ballet

Dancing has always been a passion of mine. I have been dancing since I was 3 years old progressing up to Advanced 2 in Ballet, Tap, Modern and National in the I.S.T.D Faculty. As well as studying the R.A.D syllabus, I have performed in many shows around England and dance workshops. Performing in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with New English Contemporary Ballet’s Junior Company and performing full length ballet’s with English Youth Ballet have been particular highlights.

I am currently teaching children’s dance classes for Saffron Walden Fitness Studio, with Adult Ballet hopefully to be back on the timetable soon. Having had some of the most thought of teachers coach, support and further my passion, I hope I can inspire all ages to taste the joy of dancing, even if it’s a new hobby and passion, or just relighting the passion.

Susie Bishop – Body Balance

I have been teaching Body Balance for over 8 years and I also teach Sivananda yoga, having completed my teacher training in Paradise Island in the Bahamas.  I hope my classes help people to relax and relieve stress and bring balance back to both body and mind.
